Thoughts from my Random Access Memory

Missed me? I was busy traveling, discovering and .. being alone with my thoughts. For the past 2 weeks I’ve been on the Carretera Austral, a more than beautiful road that goes through the Chilean Patagonia.

This road is amazing, at every corner your eyes are welcomed with a new and beautiful mountainous landscape. At the same time, on some occasions, I felt like I was back to Romania and to its valleys filled with beautiful forests.

In this story I want to share with you some of the thoughts I had during this time. They are just a few breadcrumbs, so I am letting your imagination continue the trail.

  1. What if people are wearing sunglasses when they are visiting new places because they want to hide the tears that inevitably appear when they witness the beauty and grandeur of mother-earth’s creations? And maybe also to hide the tears that appear when they realize the power of useless destruction we, humans, have?
  1. Talking about how far we’ve got, us, as species – In Argentina I visited “Cueva de las Manos”, a cave with paintings made by our ancestors. 9000 years ago we were leaving handprints on cave walls as a form of remembrance. Now we are visiting these remote places with 4×4 cars, packed with phones, digital cameras and other gadgets in order to take pictures and videos. And when the trip is over we upload them on the internet using the help of the satellites which we put up in the sky.
  1. And talking about technology – we became so dependent on our cameras to take pictures and videos as a form of remembering that we have forgotten to use our own eyes to record what we see. Another muscle we left without training …
  1. And talking about eyes I’ll share with you a small happening:
  • I arrived in Puyuhuapi to see the Ventisquero Colgante Glacier. Nothing else mattered, I wanted to see the hanging glacier. But guess what? The weather wasn’t on my side, it was raining and there was fog.
  • No matter the weather, I said to myself that I need to try and see it. But when I started hiking I started to realize that there is a very big chance that I won’t be able to see the glacier.
  • Once I made peace with myself about this possible unachieved goal (and because my phone was in a dry spot, not so accesible) I found myself paying more attention to the trail, to the luxurious vegetation and to different plants. And yeah, when I reached the viewpoint I wasn’t able to see the glacier because of the fog
  • But … on my way back I made a small detour on a quick hike that was leading to a lagoon … and I actually got to see the glacier

My take-aways from this experience were that:

  • when you make peace with yourself about a certain thing that you wanted … a whole different perspective opens to you
  • especially in this fast-paced world, patience and perseverance are always rewarded, one way or another (I took the short version and I was rewarded with my desire, but only after I went through the long version, which opened new perspectives to me)

I’d love to know where my breadcrumbs take you. So I’m looking forward to your messages. And, in the meantime, let’s have some Daft Punk:
